How can you ensure the holidays are a fun and welcoming time for you and your family? Norman Dowler LLP offers our best tips for how to deal with divorce during the holidays. ## Take the High Road Divorce can be an arduous journey. It is crucial to take the high road and focus on ways you can begin improving your life. Spending too much time focused on negative experiences will only take time and energy away from you. Remind yourself of the positive things you can focus on during the holidays and how you can make the experience more enjoyable. Taking the high road also means embracing change. It is usually a challenge to navigate through the adjustment phase or transition period but remember that nothing lasts forever. ## Focus on Tradition The holidays are a great time to focus on fun traditions and activities that you only get to do around this time of year. Immerse yourself in the moment and focus on the present. Dwelling in the past will only make this time of year more emotional and tough to get through. What are some family traditions you are looking forward to? Baking some holiday treats or setting up seasonal décor? Focus on the excitement and each day will naturally become easier. ## Consider the Kids If there are young children around during your holiday celebration, it is important to help them create positive memories they will cherish later in life. It can be difficult to put your emotions on the backburner and focus on the moment but try to remember that what you do can impact other people. After all, you want the kids to grow up talking about their favorite holiday stories. These should not involve sad memories that can be avoided, such as aggressive arguments or tension between family members. They will remember some of these moments for the rest of their lives. If there are custody arrangements that prevent you from seeing your children on certain holidays, then set aside some other time to celebrate with your kids. Make the holidays count for them too. ## Pay Attention to Yourself Set aside some time for yourself to deal with your emotions. If you think it will be a struggle, consider seeing a professional to help you prepare for the holidays. Pay more attention to things you can control. Whether you are newly divorced or still going through the process, remember to be civil and kind. Too often, negative emotions get in the way of a person's happiness.
